As part of our ongoing listening to and learning from communities, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation planned to hold a convening at the Intercontinental Los Angeles Downtown hotel today.
After learning about the ongoing labor dispute between members of the Unite Here 11 union and 61 hotels across Los Angeles and Orange County, we decided to postpone our meeting in solidarity with hotel workers, including cooks, bellmen, housekeepers and front desk staff, seeking greater equity in income and benefits.
Our primary focus is creating a world in which all children can thrive – something that is impossible unless their parents and caregivers can secure and maintain jobs that sustain their families. We recognize workers’ rights to negotiate for fair wages and working conditions and see exercising those rights as critical and necessary to ensure children can grow up in homes and communities that protect and promote their well-being while providing pathways to a promising and equitable future.
While we cannot be certain when this labor action will conclude, our hope is that we will be able to hold our meeting in October 2023 after hotels, employees and their union representatives have reached an agreement.
