Chilean doctor Helmut Jaeger Lunecke received the National Medicine Award from his country’s leading medical associations, the Chilean Academy of Medicine, the Association of Scientific Medical Societies of Chile, the Chilean Association of Medical Faculties and the Medical College of Chile.
Lunecke, who graduated as a surgeon in 1940, received a WKKF fellowship in 1950 to specialize in heart surgery at the John Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore, United States. After returning to Chile, he set up his country’s first Intensive Care Unit specializing in pediatric cardiology and is also remembered for several other actions carried out over the following decades, primarily in the area of pediatrics.
