In its eighth episode, DeltaVision introduces viewers to a series of fascinating women whose dedication to creating positive change have led to deep impacts for the Delta Region. Louisiana State Senator Lydia Jackson strives to create public policies that support the work of people “on the ground.” Jackson explains, “People have great expectations of government,” and Jackson works to give a voice to her constituents and uses the public-policy arena as a vehicle for change.


Alberta Smith has worked with the Humphreys County Health Advisors in Belzoni, Mississippi since the program was founded in 2000 through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The program exposes high school students to various careers in healthcare and provides mentoring from healthcare professionals, training, and support in researching and applying to the colleges of their choice.


Correspondent Fredric Smith interviews Janis F. Kearney, former diarist for President Bill Clinton and author of Cotton Field of Dreams. Kearney discusses her journey from Gould, Arkansas to the White House and the important role her family played in shaping her life and instilling a deep value for education.


Freddye Webb Pettet explains how her dedication to public service and leadership development led her away from her Delta home, into an adventurous life of international travel, and back home again. Pettet is currently a professor at the Clinton School of Public Service in Little Rock, Arkansas.


In addition to these powerful interviews, DeltaVision explores the early beginnings of the region, starting with the Louisiana Purchase. Viewers will also witness the sights, sounds and smells of Lake Providence, Louisiana’s 7th Annual Soul Food and Heritage Festival. Finally, DeltaVision shows how Air 2 Lan, a wireless Internet service provider in Jackson, Mississippi, is working to bring new technologies to the Delta Region.
