The W.K. Kellogg Foundation presented the Good Food award at the Sixth Annual Media That Matters film festival in New York City on June 1, 2006. The winning film, “Asparagus! (A Stalk-umentary)” was directed and produced by Kirsten Kelly and Anne de Mare. Three years ago the duo set out to make a film about the self-proclaimed Asparagus Capital of the Nation, the tiny community in western Michigan where Kelly grew up. Kelly and de Mare shot the film in Oceana County, talking to people about asparagus, their lives, and their livelihoods. Two distinct stories began to emerge from the process: one about asparagus collections, a Super Stalk comic book hero, 7-foot tall asparagus costumes and the heart of a community’s identity; and another story about family farms, the U.S. War on Drugs, and an overwhelming fight for a place in the Global Economy.Watch the short version of the 72-minute feature-length version of the film by clicking on the link below.
