Why This Work Matters

Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation™ (TRHT) is a movement for community members – individuals, neighbors, organizations and public decision-makers to collaborate on creating a more equitable community for everyone. TRHT is community-led, cross-racial, cross-sector and intergenerational. TRHT is modeled on Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRCs) around the world, like those held in South Africa at the end of apartheid. The TRHT approach begins with honestly examining the current effects of historical and contemporary racism, prioritizing truth-telling and accountability. Participants work together to envision what their community would look like without racism and build collective power among people of different races, ethnicities and backgrounds to work toward that vision.

The TRHT Framework

Using the TRHT framework, all local coalitions address the foundational areas of truth-telling, racial healing, relationship-building and narrative change. Then, based on their collective vision, they plan, design and pursue work in one or all of the following issue-focused areas:

  • Separation – segregation, colonization, concentrated poverty.
  • Law – civil, criminal and public policies.
  • Economy – structured inequality and barriers to opportunity.

The ultimate goals:

  • Transform systems that harm children and families.
  • Bring about a new collective, foundational philosophy that honors the inherent equal value of all
    human beings.
  • Change everyday decision-making about the issues that shape children’s lives for the better.
