In MSNBC’s regular feature, “How We Eat: Who’s Behind the Food,” correspondent Jon Bonne reports on the growth of farmers markets, farm-to-school, and other direct marketing efforts by farmers to customers such as restaurants, institutional food companies and their own neighbors. “For Americans born into an era of year-round fresh produce, global food distribution and a food supply that grows cheaper and more commoditized each year, it has become a welcome novelty to eat something from just down the road,” Bonne writes. Food and Society grantees quoted include: Missouri Rural Crisis Center, Community Food Security Coalition and FoodRoutes Network.
