BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – Tony Berkley has been selected as the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s director of Mission-Driven Investments effective June 1, 2011 replacing the previous director, Tom Reis, who will retire later this year.
Prior to being selected as the director of Mission-Driven Investments (MDI), Berkley served on the MDI team as program and portfolio officer, and as a core member of the design and implementation team that successfully took MDI from concept to reality beginning in 2007. During the last four years, Berkley has been responsible for sourcing, reviewing, structuring and presenting investments to the MDI Investment Committee resulting in $20 million in debt and equity transactions that improve conditions for vulnerable children by advancing education practice, providing healthy food for kids and creating community economic development opportunities.
Berkley joined the foundation in 2003 as an evaluation manager. He also served previously as the deputy director for the Education & Learning team and as national director for the Supporting Partnerships to Assure Ready Kids (SPARK) initiative, managing the foundation’s evaluation process.
“Tony’s unique breadth of experience in program and investments provide the leadership necessary to advance our mission-driven investing. He is a great asset to the foundation,” said WKKF of Staff, Jim McHale.
Berkley is an anthropologist with 15 years of domestic and international experience in impact investing, program design, strategic planning and education research. He has held faculty positions at the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan and is the author of numerous publications and presentations in the fields of mission investing, knowledge management, education and anthropology.
John Duong recently joined the Kellogg Foundation and will serve as program and portfolio officer for the MDI team, working with the foundation’s Trustee Finance Committee, Board of Trustees and MDI Committee to provide overall investment portfolio management for U.S. and international investments. He also manages MDI related grantmaking and program-related investing and assists with engaging and monitoring outside investment advisors, consultants and legal counsel.
Tom Reis will remain with the foundation until Oct. 15, 2011 and will serve as senior advisor to the chief of staff, Jim McHale.
Reis has served the Kellogg Foundation for nineteen years. Prior to leading the MDI portfolio, he led an innovation and design team working to co-create ideas and practices relevant to current and future foundation program effectiveness. Reis also served eight years as a program director with the Civic and Philanthropic Engagement as well as the Michigan programming teams, and was the foundation’s first director of social marketing.
“Tom has been a tremendous contributor to the foundation. He has played a major role in many parts of our programming, always seeking to provide greater clarity and purpose to our work,” said Jim McHale. “His leadership in the field of mission-driven investing has been notable and he has helped to build and lead the field, indeed a lasting legacy.”
