Civil rights activist Myrlie Evers-Williams opened the healing day of the 2013 America Healing Conference in Asheville, N.C. with a moving reflection on the opportunities that her tireless work for civil rights has afforded and presented her. Evers-Williams also stated that “America has a lot of healing to do,” and advised attendees that while hate can be fuel, it should be avoided because it erodes the spirit.

“Digging [racism] out of our unconscious requires new stories, and those are our stories, and we’ve got to learn not only to share them but to amplify them in all those vehicles and venues that shape our collective understanding of who we are.” — Dr. Gail Christopher, WKKF vice president of program strategy

Attendees gathered in small groups for healing sessions led by 40 seasoned racial healing practitioners from communities across the country, where they discussed their stories of impact on their journey toward racial healing. Participants were moved by the power of the experience and meaningful connections with peers.
