New Orleanians are commandeering a new narrative for its city and are committed to rebuilding with equity at the center. The city, which once served as one of the largest slave trading ports in the nation, today recognizes that naming the thing – racism, structural inequality, the caste of the Confederacy – is essential to building a different future.
New Orleans’ dream of becoming an equitable and child-centered city begins with prioritizing affordable, accessible and high-quality early childhood education. Thanks to our partners’ voices and vision, Louisiana’s early childhood education system now ranks 8th in the nation.
New Orleans is now a city where breastfeeding is normalized and encouraged, in part because of long-term investments by WKKF.
Racial wealth gaps close when access to capital and high-growth industries expand. In a fully equitable city, families can get good jobs that enable economic security and wealth-building. Our investments support the city’s majority Black New Orleanian population, and Hispanic, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities to achieve job security and financial stability.
